Model A & B Engine Powered Vehicle Models

Produced in England by
Ford Motor Company, Ltd.
Overview
This page details Ford, Fordson, and Thames passenger car, commercial car, and truck vehicle models produced in Great Britain by the Ford Motor Company, Ltd. from 1928 through 1940 which specifically used the four cylinder Model A & B type small or large bore engines.
Beginning in 1931, these vehicles were produced at Ford's manufacturing facility at Dagenham, England. Dagenham was a complete manufacturing facility, much like the Rouge, and not just a vehicle assembly plant.
Ford England Vehicles & Dagenham Engines:
Vehicles were produced in Great Britain using Model AF, A, AA, BF, B, BB, and E98T four cylinder engines, and were variously marketed under the Ford, Fordson, and Thames vehicle brands.
The 'Fordson' truck brand essentially began in 1932 with the introduction of the Model B engine and the Model BB Two Tons truck chassis. Passenger car and most light truck models continued to be identified as 'Ford' brand.
The 'Thames' brand was applied to Forward Control (cab-over-engine) Van and Lorry models beginning in 1939. Normal Control (conventional cab) truck models continued to be identified as 'Fordson' brand.
Both large bore (24 HP) and small bore (AF & BF 14.9 HP) engines were produced.
The Model A and AF engine production ended in 1932.
Also, the Model B and BF engine production started in 1932.
Small bore Model BF engine production ended in about 1935.
The E98T engine design of 1939 was a special Ford Dagenham variant Model BB truck engine with a unique block casting and timing cover, and having an oil pan fitted with a Ford designed oil filter system.
1940 was the last year of vehicle production at Ford Dagenham using any Model B/BB variant engine.
Canadian Engines:
Model A and B engines were produced in Canada from 1928 to 1934 for the domestic Canadian market, as well as for export. Canadian-produced RHD vehicles were primarily destined for export to British Empire countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, and elsewhere, but were not typically available in Great Britain itself.
German Engines:
The G28T engine of 1942 was a German Ford Köln improved design Model BB truck engine variant produced only in Germany during and after World War II from the 1940's to 1950's, but was never produced or originally available in the US, England, Russia, or elsewhere. Ford Köln was under the control of the Third Reich and the Nazis before and during the war. Ford Köln was returned to Ford control after WWII ended.
Russian Engines:
The GAZ Model B engine was a Ford USA design Model BB truck engine produced only in Russia from the 1930's through 1950's before, during, and after World War II. It was never produced or originally available in the US, England, Germany, or elsewhere. The Soviet Union began producing GAZ Model A's and AA's and Model B engines in Russia in 1932 under license from Ford.
These GAZ models were initially built in a new Soviet plant designed by architect Albert Khan for Ford, and initially operated with advisors from Ford USA. The GAZ-AA trucks and Model A Phaetons were first assembled there using parts produced and supplied by Ford USA.
In the Roman alphabet GAZ stands for Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod, Nizhny Novgorod, translated as Gorky Automobile Plant. In Russian Cyrillic "Го́рьковский
Автомоби́льный
Заво́д" is shortened to "ГАЗ" (GAZ).
Ford England Dagenham Production:
In some cases the rows of the tables below show the year-by-year evolution of changes of the Ford England marketing and branding names of the vehicles, as identified by Instruction Books and advertising, while the technical details remained the same.
As an example, 1932-35 Fordson Model AAB, Model BB, and Commercial Vehicle truck models were essentially the same physical vehicles, with revised naming and identification as the years progressed.
Ford Motor Company, Ltd. Model A & B engine Vehicle Models listed below are arranged by type into four categories:
- Passenger Car
- Van & Light Delivery (10-15 CWT commercial)
- Normal Control (conventional cab Vans & Lorries)
- Forward Control (cab-over-engine Vans & Lorries)

I am always looking for additional related Ford Motor Company, Ltd. England literature and data to more accurately and completely describe their 1930's vehicle models which offered Model A and B four cylinder engines. The number of actual surviving vehicles (as well as literature) is small and scant. Please assist me in this endeavor! Thank you!
